Working with Local Businesses  - Cuatro Groos

Cuatro received some feedback from members of the NA and members of the business community in our neighborhood indicating that there is interest among the business owners to plug in with the NNA, work with the NNA and garner NNA support of their businesses.  Cuatro suggested setting of a sub-committee or task force of members of NNA to work with our neighborhood businesses to deal with issues like graffiti, attracting the kinds of businesses we want to see in the neighborhood, and working with the businesses already here to publicize them.

After some discussion of this issue,  a motion was made and seconded and the NNA members  present voted (show of hands)  to create an official sub-committee/task force to act as business liaison for the NNA. Cuatro will follow up by sending out email to the NNA to recruit volunteers to serve on the Business Liaison sub-committee/task force.

Austin Neighborhoods Council – Sebastian Wren

Sebastian reported that he and Annie attended the last ANC meeting where the members of NAC  issued an endorsement for candidates running for City Council. Sebastian explained that some ANC members were reluctant to endorse Mayor Wynn or Brewster McCracken reporting that Austin neighborhoods had not really improved enough under their tenure.  In the end, however, ANC did endorse Wynn and McCracken.

Website/List serve – Update Sebastian

Sebastian reported that he can have a Northfield NA discussion list ready to use immediately and proposed creating it, testing it and conferring with Bapi, who runs the NNDL, to see if cross-linking the two separate discussion lists would be possible or agreeable to Bapi.

A motion was made and seconded, and  a simple majority of NNA members voted to approve the creation of a separate discussion list for NNA content, issues, interests.

It was agreed that the newly elected Web Master would be the appointed moderator of the new NNA discussion list.

Announcements:

Kevin Garry announced that his new coffee shop – Epoch will be opening around May 15 at the “old dry cleaners” space on North Loop and Chesterfield.   Epoch will be a 24 x 7 cafe.

Jack Howison announced that there will be a meeting at city council on
Wednesday April 3 regarding vertical mixed use projects. Seemed to think it’s an effort to circumvent the impervious cover ordinance as well as other
restrictions.  Per Cuatro, the meeting was about the city council's vertical
mixed use ordinance.  It is going before neighborhoods for comment before they will vote on it.  My understanding is that hoods will have the option to opt out  or limit its impact (or just allow it).  The ordinance relaxes parking and setback requirements to encourage more vertical mixed use.

The packet sent out by the city is clear as mud and even the ANC's zoning chair is confused by it. Cuatro said he planned to attend.

Discussion ensued about the impact that NNA can have within the city and how important it is for NNA to be and remain visible.

Beka Clark-Smith talked about the newsletter, ideas for new issues and her plans for future issues.
