Northfield Neighborhood - Meeting Minutes - 09/11/06 The meeting was called to order by Sebastian Wren, President, at 7:05 PM. TREASURERS REPORT: Joe Carcione, Treasurer reports activity since last report of $746 expenses and $515 income resulting in the current balance of $1059.23. Sebastian reports that the NNA's Neighbors Night Out on 8/1/06 was an awesome success with some 60-70 neighborhood folks attending. Not a drop of food or drink remained at the end of the evening! Sebastian kudo'd the newsletter/ deliverers for advertising the event in a timely fashion and being instrumental in drawing people to the event. JESSICA WILSON from Keep Austin Beautiful (KAB; jessica@keepaustinbeautiful.org) reports that a rare plant species, False Dragonhead aka Obedient Plant, was found, in Waller Creek in the Northloop area and in Skyview, by the Watershed ProtectionDepartment. Because of this find, funds ($2500 to be shared across two neighborhoods) have been designated for beautification and restoration of Waller Creek via planting of ornamental native shrubs, trees and grasses on both sides of the creek between Franklin and North Loop. Jessica stated that, while KAB has a large established volunteer base, it would be beneficial for Northfield neighbors to participate. An initial work day for planting plus a work day approximately once per quarter for maintenance would be needed. Jessica asked if there was support in the neighborhood association for this project. Feelings overall were very favorable and a list of volunteers was begun. Sebastian pointed out that there are drawbacks, i.e. these plants will thicken the brush at the creek and can't be mowed down therefore the area can't be cleaned of snakes, mice etc. Jessica states that our communication with her/KAB is ongoing and problems can be dealt with as they come up. Jessica will confer with the Watershed Dept. to see if the initial work-date can be set for late October or early November. Sebastian will write an article for the next newsletter to announce the plan to the neighborhood and draw people out for the "ground breaking" day. KELLY ABSHIRE/ARARAT RESTAURANT has contacted Sebastian. She desires to expand Ararat's back patio to develop the entertainment at the site on evenings and weekends. To do so, she needs to, per City of Austin, locate 27 more parking places. There have been 35 potential spots allocated by Sari, AM PM Vintage, and Montage. Signage would direct cars to these extra spots. Kelly requests from NNA a letter of support for this plan. Discussion resulted in the following concerns: 1) Increase in pedestrian traffic and 2) Concern for the impact on immediate (residential) neighbors. Outcome: Sebastian will contact Kelly and tell her that NNA would like to hear results of her contacting immediate neighbors for their support and he will invite her to come to the October NNA meeting. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Cuatro Groos thanks those in the NNA for the Babies R'Us Gift Certificate. Congratulations to Cuatro and Alicia and welcome to the neighborhood, baby Maisy. Beka Smith-Clark announced that Austin Independent Business Alliance (AIBA) is sponsoring a "Second Sunday" neighborhood festival (open businesses, crafts, music? etc) beginning in October at the business district- corner of N.Loop and Ave. F. The time of day of the festival is not known. The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 PM. Next meeting is October 2, 2006 Respectfully submitted, Jan Seward, Co-secretary.
