REPORT FROM NLNPT SPECIAL MEETING 5/21/09

Patrick Goetz, President Northloop Neighborhood Planning Team, reported on this meeting which addressed:

  1. Travis County North Campus: Travis County is visualizing the area from the (former) Chair King (Airport and 53rd st) north to the (former) Haverty's as the "north" campus of County offices, consolidating offices from downtown to this location. The initial planning will involve the Chair King site which, once a plan is in place, will be demolished. Suggestions were made from the NLNPT for this site, ie structured parking, green space, retail, etc. The NLNPT will keep abreast of developments with this plan.
  2. Highland Mall : Representatives from the Highland Neighborhood Association were present. They have been meeting with the City of Austin to begin talking about the future of this location. As Highland Mall has lost one major anchor and the future of 2 anchor stores is uncertain, and with malls around the country closing, an opportunity is seen now to, together with others, develop a site plan in which we visualize exactly what we want to see there ie % retail, % residential, retention pond, green space etc. This is a preemptive measure and would be presented to the City Council before a developer actually purchases the land. Without a site plan, a developer would be able to do whatever they pleased. The "model "for this is the Triangle.

Anyone interested in participating at any level in the above planning should contact Patrick Goetz (pgoetz@mail.utexas.edu) or Kriss Schluderman (khaos_king@yahoo.com)

KEEP AUSTIN BEAUTIFUL GRANT

Cindy Black reports that the Jessica at Keep Austin Beautiful was contacted regarding the grant money ($1150) provided to the NNA for a children’s park last year. The plans for that park have not been able to come to fruition. Jessica has recommended the grant money be returned to KAB. Cindy made a motion that the money be returned due to no specific planned purpose exists now. Mary seconded the motion. The members voted 10 in favor 3 opposed. The treasurer will contact Jessica regarding the return of the funds. Another grant application can be made in the future when there is a specific purpose planned.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH/CRIME

Scott Johnson, Chairperson of Neighborhood Watch/Block Captains reports he had a "meet and greet" get together of block captains in May, has sent flyers around the neighborhood regarding safety and crime prevention to increase awareness and education, and he will write an article for the next Newsletter. Scott said of particular note is the "broken window syndrome" in which homes in disrepair tend to suffer crime and he encourages everyone to get the word out to neighbors to keep homes and yards in working order.

Scott has spoken with Kelly Lahood (kelly.lahood@ci.austin.tx.us 974-5833) who is still our neighborhood officer and , due to funding issues, she won't be able to come and speak to us at a meeting as she did last year.

Cindy reported that Bruning Green is frequented by alcohol drinking men with dogs frequenting the Green. She calls police who are very responsive.

John reported that he has received no word from Police regarding the theft which occurred in his office building some months ago.

As stated in a recent nnadl communication, there was a kick-in theft of a TV from a household at Duval and 51st st.

COMMUNICATION

It was explained by Sebastian that there are 4 separate discussion lists available to neighborhood residents:

  1. NLNPT@yahoo.com (Northloop Neighborhood Planning Team)
  2. NNDL@14gram.com (a discussion list that encompasses this and several adjacent neighborhoods, was founded and is moderated by a local resident, and posts to this site are available on national websites
  3. NNADL@northfieldna.org (our neighborhood association list, moderated from within, posts not available to national sites)
  4. the northfieldwatch@yahoo.com (neighborhood watch).

Currently, only 10% of neighborhood residents are subscribers to the nnadl discussion list.

The NNA will develop a mailing list for the officers to send announcements to the neighborhood. It will be a low traffic, one-way, no-return list for the purpose of announcing NNA meetings, minutes of NNA meetings, upcoming events, Bruning Green workdays etc. More information will follow.
